Description: The name of this art show recalls Carol Reed’s film about the story of Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel. The film reflects the artist’s struggle and pain in executing his famous fresco and the splendor of the finished masterpiece. The two words stand next to each other as polar opposites expressing the highs and lows, the struggles and joys, the yin and yang of human experience. There is a tension between agony and ecstasy; a great wave rising then crashing down by a wind that holds it all together. This is the experience of being...and art, true art is a reflection of this dance of the unity of opposites.

Agony and ecstasy in artistic expression may be reflected in the pain of loneliness or the exuberance of love, the darkness of night or the brightness of sunrise, the struggle to survive or the triumph over tragedy. This show will echo these poles of human experience as they emerge from the individual artist’s personal experience, unique expression, and distinctive style.

Description "I wish I could leave you certain of the images in my mind, because they are so beautiful that I hate to think they will be extinguished when I am. Well, but again, this life has its own mortal loveliness.” Marilynne Robinson, Gilead

Art arising out of the tension between the moment and eternity puts that vision into the world to stave off the vanishing of some particular loveliness.

What image does Marilynne’s quote invoke in you? The show, Mortal Loveliness, seeks examples of art that preserves a moment, a place, or a time. Pieces can represent the personal or universal.
