In this season of emerging shadow and the stillness of approaching winter, what role does light play in your work?

Description: "Sharps and Flats" is an abstract term that can mean many things; it can denote subtle changes in music, creating art experienced by vibration and sound that are slightly “off” from the usual. Other examples may include forms, outlines, or silhouettes, signifying high peaks, blunt edges or planes of space; quickness and dull headedness; or something that’s tangy and tasteless. What does it mean to you?

How does this manifest in visual media? Capture the essences and moods created by sounds, shapes or images in natural, man-made, or ethereal worlds.

Agony and Ecstasy

Submission Deadline: September 21, 2018

Show Dates: November 5, 2018 - Feb 7, 2019

Reception Date: November 17, 2018

Bring In: November 2, 2018

Take Down: February 8, 2019

Description: The name of this art show recalls Carol Reed’s film about the story of Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel. The film reflects the artist’s struggle and pain in executing his famous fresco and the splendor of the finished masterpiece. The two words stand next to each other as polar opposites expressing the highs and lows, the struggles and joys, the yin and yang of human experience. There is a tension between agony and ecstasy; a great wave rising then crashing down by a wind that holds it all together. This is the experience of being...and art, true art is a reflection of this dance of the unity of opposites.

Agony and ecstasy in artistic expression may be reflected in the pain of loneliness or the exuberance of love, the darkness of night or the brightness of sunrise, the struggle to survive or the triumph over tragedy. This show will echo these poles of human experience as they emerge from the individual artist’s personal experience, unique expression, and distinctive style.
